Supporting kids with learning difficulties through evidence-based, multisensory structured literacy — personalised to every child's pace and goals.
Using multisensory, evidence-based practices, Sounds to Scribe aims to engage and support kids with various learning difficulties, such as, dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia with reading, writing, spelling, and numeracy.
I'm Katie Hayes, a Literacy Therapist based in Hurstbridge in Melbourne's north-east, specialising in structured literacy and numeracy support for children aged 5–12.
Knowing that every child learns in their own unique way, I offer personalised lesson plans that focus on each child's learning goals — ensuring your child reaches their full potential at their own pace.

I use a Multisensory Structured Language (MSL) approach with everything I teach — scientifically proven to be beneficial, structured and building at each child's own pace.
Grounded in the science of reading and multisensory structured language research. Every technique I use is backed by decades of evidence.
Every lesson plan is tailored to your child's specific goals and learning style. No two children learn the same way — and I never treat them as if they do.
Skills are built step by step, revisited weekly, and extended only when your child is ready. Progress is celebrated at every stage.
For the first one or two sessions I'll carry out a literacy and numeracy assessment to understand exactly where your child is and what areas to focus on. Lesson plans are adjusted as your child's level progresses.
Sessions are 50 minutes long, and for best outcomes I recommend attending weekly.
At no additional cost, each child receives a take-home folder with books and activities to practise between sessions. This is an important part of the programme — please bring it to every session.

After every session a reflection email is compiled covering what your child has achieved and areas that need further support. This is shared with your child's teacher (with permission) and their family — ensuring all parties are connected and aware of your child's progress.
Our daughter has made wonderful progress with her reading since working with Katie. She has become more confident, reads more fluently, and most importantly now enjoys reading much more than before. Katie has been incredibly patient, encouraging, and supportive, always tailoring the sessions to suit our daughter's learning style.
Parent of a studentOur primary school aged daughter was fortunate to be under Katie's tutelage for a few years prior to her commencing high school. Katie taught her essential strategies and gave her a good understanding of how her brain processes and holds information - encouraging a love of learning. Quite simply, Katie's time with our daughter changed her life.
Parent of a former studentI would recommend Katie to any parent looking to help build their child's confidence with maths. My daughter has ADHD and dyscalculia and always thought she was bad at maths. She's not bad at it - she just needs to learn it in a different way. The change in her attitude towards maths has been amazing.
Parent of a student with ADHD & dyscalculiaMy kids have been doing Maths and Literacy sessions with Katie since last year, and it's been such a positive experience. She's wonderful with them; they genuinely look forward to each session because she makes learning fun and creates such a warm, welcoming environment. I highly recommend Katie.
Parent of multiple studentsThe impact Katie has had on my daughter's learning journey has been profound and transformative. My child has dyslexia and dysgraphia, and Katie's insight during the diagnostic period was incredibly reassuring and instrumental in helping us understand our child's needs. She equips students with lifelong learning strategies - her multisensory approach ensures concepts are deeply understood and retained. I would highly recommend Katie to any family seeking a knowledgeable, compassionate, and truly life-changing educator.
Parent of a student with dyslexia & dysgraphia"Katie has increased her confidence and engagement in the classroom and is building the foundations she needs to learn maths. The change in her attitude has been amazing."Parent of a student with ADHD & dyscalculia
MSL is an evidence-based teaching approach that engages multiple senses - visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic - to support reading, writing, and spelling. It is structured and explicit, building skills step by step at your child's own pace. MSL principles also apply to numeracy, making it an effective approach for children who find maths challenging.
No. While I work with many children who have dyslexia, a formal diagnosis is not required. I work with any child who is finding literacy or numeracy challenging.
I work with children aged 5–12.
Sessions are 50 minutes long. For the best outcomes I recommend attending weekly.
The first one or two sessions are spent on a literacy and numeracy assessment to understand exactly where your child is and which areas to focus on. This forms the basis of a personalised lesson plan.
Sessions are held at Allwood House, 901 Main Rd, Hurstbridge VIC 3099. Parking is available next to the tennis courts.
